Tiama

Tiama (Entandrophragma angolense) is a tropical hardwood native to West and Central Africa. Often considered a close relative or alternative to genuine mahogany, Tiama is prized for its attractive appearance, workability, and moderate durability. Its reddish-brown color deepens with age, and it is commonly used in both decorative and structural applications.

  • Color: Pinkish to reddish-brown when freshly cut, maturing to a deeper brown-red.
  • Grain: Interlocked, often producing ribbon-like or wavy patterns.
  • Texture: Medium to coarse, with a moderate natural luster.
  • Figure: Can display decorative figuring, especially when quarter saw.
  • Density (air-dried): 550–650 kg/m³ (34–41 lb/ft³)
  • Hardness (Janka): ~810 lbf (3,600 N)
  • Strength: Moderately strong; suitable for structural and joinery work.
  • Shrinkage: Moderate, with fair dimensional stability once seasoned.

Durability & Workability

  • Durability: Moderately durable; resistant to termites but not fully rot-resistant.
  • Workability:
  • Machines and finishes well.
  • Easy to glue, screw, and nail.
  • Can cause some dulling of cutting edges due to silica presence.
  • Slight risk of tear-out with interlocked grain during planning.

Tiama is often marketed as a mahogany substitute due to its visual similarities and ease of workability. It offers a balance between beauty and performance, making it a reliable and attractive option for both commercial and fine woodworking.
