Red Meranti, also known as Dark Red Meranti or Philippine Mahogany, is a tropical hardwood native to Southeast Asia,
particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
It is widely recognized for its rich, reddish to purplish-brown color, often accented by white resin streaks.
The wood typically has a coarse texture, low natural luster, and a grain that can be straight or interlocked, depending on the cut.
Properties and Workability
Red Meranti is considered moderately durable, with limited resistance to decay and non-durable performance in outdoor or damp conditions unless treated.
It has an average dried weight of approximately 42 lbs/ft³ (675 kg/m³).
Although it generally machines and finishes well, it may contain small amounts of silica, which can lead to tool dulling. It also has poor steam-bending characteristics.
Property Value
Color Dark reddish to purplish brown, with white resin streaks
Grain Straight to interlocked, coarse texture
Janka hardness ~800-900 lbf (varies by species)
Density ~675 kg/m³ (42 lbs/ft³)
Durability Low; not naturally rot-resistant
Common Uses
While Red Meranti is often marketed as Philippine Mahogany, it is not botanically related to true mahogany (Swietenia spp.).
However, it remains a popular choice in the building industry due to its workability, cost-effectiveness, and attractive appearance.
Its main limitations are its poor durability and lack of rot resistance, which restrict its use in exterior or high moisture environments
